DISTRIBUTION, EVOLUTION AND SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION OF RESEARCH GROUPS ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY IN BRAZIL

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to track geographic distribution, evolution and scientific production of Research Groups in Childhood Obesity (GPOI) in Brazil. Methods: A systematic search of the current base and census from Research Groups Directory of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), using the exact phrase “Childhood obesity” and Health Sciences as a filter. The scientific production of the groups was obtained by analysis of Lattes curriculum of their leaders. We analyzed the census from the year 2000, according to the year of creation of GPOI. Results: We found n = 30 GPOI, with 40.1% located in the Southeast, 33.3% in the Northeast, 23.3% in the South and 3.3% in the Central-west. According to the location and the production of the leaders, we have, respectively, 27.3% and 32.5% in the Southeast, 38.1% and 25.3% in the South, 33.7% and 39.7% in the Northeast and 0.9% and 2.5% in the Central-west. The north region has no registered groups. For formation period, 1.5% of GPOI emerged between 2000 and 2002; 1.5% between 2002 and 2004; 1.0% between 2004 and 2006; 0.5% between 2006 and 2008; and 0.6% between 2008 and 2010. Physical education has 10.0% of GPOI. Conclusions: Incentive policies are necessary for the implementation of research projects on this theme, because this non-communicable chronic disease is growing.
