Rio Parado became an agricultural municipality located in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais, after its dismemberment from Piraguara. With that, it acquired the structure and autonomy to manage its territory and population, which underwent profound socioeconomic and cultural transformations. In addition, it requested the installation of a university campus, during the expansion of higher education, promoted by the federal government through the Expandife Program. Over time, the municipality went from a calm and peaceful place to a tumultuous urban center, according to the perception of the resident population. Social problems have intensified, mainly, with the absence of employment and income opportunities in view of the non-existent infrastructure to meet the new contingent coming from neighboring regions.
