Abstract

Achilles tendinopathy is an easy occurrence due to its multifactorial cause. Among the several forms that can be used in the conservative treatment of this injury, it is beginning to have agreement among the authors about the benefits that eccentric training can provide to patients. Thus, it is observed the importance of studies about this subject. This review aimed to analyze the studies that researched about the effectiveness of eccentric exercise in Achilles tendinopathy. 20 studies were analyzed, being 15 of them randomized clinical trials and five experimental uncontrolled studies. Of these 20 studies, nine used eccentric exercise and some other type of intervention based on kinesiotherapy; on the other hand, the other 11 studies used the eccentric exercise as an intervention, associated or compared with some therapy associated. It is concluded, then, that eccentric exercise is an effective form of conservative treatment for tendinopathy affecting the Achilles tendon, but little evidence suggest that it is superior to other forms of therapeutical exercise or associated therapies.
