Studies of work engagement have grown exponentially in the past decade worldwide. Despite this, there is still a literature vacuum about the construct in the Brazilian public sector. Aiming to contribute to the closing of this gap, this essay aims to propose a conceptual theoretical model for the study of work engagement in the public sector. The essay presents an analysis of the conceptual, theoretical, and empirical evolution of work engagement. Based on this, it discusses the literature gaps and the possibilities for advancing knowledge on the topic in the public context. As a result, a research agenda for future studies is proposed, guiding academics and practitioners in understanding the causes and consequences of work engagement within the scope of public administration.
