Abstract

Abstract:Research objective: To understand the political performance of African-based religious organizations in Santana do Livramento, RS, through the analysis of the Municipal Council of the People of Terreiro’s performance.

Theoretical framework: Discussions based on the historical perspective of African-based religions and their insertion in the process of political participation in Brazil and RS, as well as the legal developments that accompanied this process, constitute the theoretical basis of this study.

Methodology: The research is characterized as exploratory, with a qualitative approach. The method used was the case study and the data collection strategy involved the use of multiple techniques.

Results: the creation of the CMPTSL is seen as a great advance in historical and normative terms. The CMPTSL faces important difficulties in regard to its organization and functioning, presenting significant resistance in terms of participation and legitimacy.

Originality: This study addresses the political participation of religious organizations which are historically marginalized from the social and political point of view, and incorporates the element of transnationality into the analysis.

Theoretical and practical contributions: The research contributes to the writing of papers on political participation of marginalized citizens and to the insertion of the cross-border perspective, and the transnational analysis, contributes to different fields of study, such as Political Science, International Relations and Public Administration.
