Results: An inverse relationship was found between per capita spending on education, lagged in three periods, and violent crimes against property.
Originality: The research contributes to the literature, especially in Brazil, as only two similar studies were found, but with different periods and objects of study.
Theoretical and practical contributions: The study contributes to the Brazilian literature on the subject and can contribute to the discussion regarding the optimal allocation of public spending on education.
