Abstract

Ancient in terms of origin and new in terms of regulation, the secretariat profession is characterized by the evolution of the profession, class struggles and the search for professional recognition. In the brazilian scenario, the area developed with greater emphasis from the 1950s and 1960s, having in the following decades achieved professional regulation, creation of a Code of Ethics, obtained credentials for higher education and expanded the scope of its performance . However, even in the face of such elements, questions still arise about what a secretarial professional does. In this sense, this essay aims to promote a discussion on secretarial work in two spheres: ‘professional assignments’ and ‘creation of the professional’. Therefore, concepts of professionalism and professional identity are presented in order to try to delimit a field of action of the secretariat, emphasizing the attributions defined in the legislation and other guiding documents.
