Abstract

- Research objective: This article aims to analyze the results of the Cisterns in Schools Program, from the perspective of servants of schools located in the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri valleys, state of Minas Gerais.

- Theoretical framework: The article is based on authors who describe the main characteristics of the Brazilian semi-arid region, with emphasis on Dias (2013), Souza et al. (2016) and Sousa et al. (2017), and those that explored the Cisterns in Schools Program, with emphasis on the authors Gottfried (2010), Costa e Dias (2013), Santana and Arsky (2016), Detrich (2019), ASA (2020), and Santos and Borja (2020).

- Methodology: Using material provided by the Ministry of Citizenship and the Articulação no Semiárido Brasileiro (ASA), we surveyed schools of municipalities in the field studied that built cisterns via the Program. The universe of 132 schools was identified, analyzed statistically through questionnaires answered by one of its representatives (75% return rate).

- Results: It was found that the Program fulfills its objective, being generally well evaluated by the representatives of the benefited schools, who were mostly satisfied with the cistern, with its state of conservation, with the guidelines received and with the impact of this technology on students' lives.

- Originality: As much as the literature allows the identification of a reasonable number of studies on the Cisterns Program, studies on the Cisterns in Schools Program are rare.

- Contributions: The survey data call attention to some issues that must be scored in order to improve the Program. In addition, we highlight the need for measures to improve the handling of the cistern and the water it stored.
