Abstract

Inadequate policies and technologies have contributed to the economic, social, and environmental unsustainability of agriculture and livestock production worldwide. Through a review of prior literature, this study analyses the silvopastoral systems (SPS) - an association of trees, forage, and animals - as a tool to attain sustainable animal production in the contexts of increasing populations, crescent demand for food, and environmental impacts. This review covers major SPS advantages, such as environmental services, as well as disadvantages, such as a lack of information and cost of implementation. Recommendations for the adoption of public policies and tools for monitoring environmental impacts are also suggested herein.
