Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the thermal conditions inside poultry or cattle sheds made with five types of alternative roof materials and compare with clay tiles, under hot conditions, using the si,ilitude theory and thermal environmental indices. Comparison between the black globe temperature and humidity index, the radiant thermal load and thermal effectiveness provided by the cover at level of the birds or cattle, in general, showed similarity between results. During hot days, the best conditions were associated with clay cover. Initial cost reduction for roof, compared to the clay was estimated to be 47.7% for Reciplac with aluminized coating on the outer and white coating on the inner surface, and 45.5% with the same material except with neutral coating on the inner surface and 41.2% for the roof made of Tetra Pak tiles.
