O hormônio do crescimento (hGH) possui importante participação na regulação do metabolismo. O hGH recombinante foi desenvolvido para ser utilizado no tratamento de pacientes com deficiência desse hormônio. No entanto, passou a ser usado de forma irregular por atletas de diversas modalidades e faz parte da lista de substâncias proibidas do Comitê Olímpico Internacional (COI) desde 1989. Esta revisão teve por objetivo apresentar aspectos relacionados à utilização do hGH, destacando o doping pelo seu uso, seus efeitos ergolíticos e os métodos de detecção. Dessa forma, foi realizada uma revisão de literatura nas bases de dados PubMed, SciELO e LILACS, utilizando as palavraschave growth hormone e doping.
