Abstract: This article aims to reflect about the so called “Public’s Field (Campo de Públicas) movement, an area of studies, research and professional practice. It asks in what measure that movement characterizes itself as a “scientific community”, a Khun´s term. It is based in theoretical and empirical research, which includes documents and bibliography. At the beginning, it identifies the existence of an “emergent paradigm” related to public interest and republican values as the parameters of a collective identity assumed by the members of the movement, which gives them a characteristic of scientific community in construction. The historical trajectory of the area – which was taken by frequent crisis and redefinitions - is exposed, until it becomes authonomous. In sequence, it discusses the concepts of public interest and republicanism which gives theoretical substance to the scientific community in emergency. At least, it shows some challenges and possibilities to the “Public’s Field” in order to confirm its condition as a scientific community.
