Management plan and generation of green jobs: an alternative for the Historic Center of Cuiabá-MT

The Historic Center of Cuiabá in the state of Mato Grosso - Brazil is recognized as national heritage by IPHAN (National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute); however, it is in a process of degradation, compromising the economic activities in the region. In light of this situation, a Management Plan for the Historic Center of Cuiabá (PGCHC) was drawn as part of a joint action between the government, academia and the United Nations (UNIDO/UN). The purpose of this article is to present the PGCHC’s guidelines in a systematic way. The methodology consists of diagnosing the socioeconomic and built environments and then elaborating the proposals. The key industries to be encouraged are education, civil construction, and trades and services, with an emphasis on the creative economy and tourism. The main contribution of the study is the provision of subsidies for the implementation of public policies capable of triggering an economic process that generates green jobs linked to the preservation of the region's cultural and environmental heritage.
