Abstract

This study was done to evaluate the physical, chemical and biochemical characteristics of wastewater from the washing, pulping and demucilaging of coffee cherries. Cherry of variety ‘Catuaí’ were harvested by strip-picking onto a cloth, between May and July, 2004. Water samples during the process were collected from the inlet and outlet of the mechanical washer/separator, from the pulping machine, and from the fermentation tanks. Approximately 11.000 L of cherries were processed per day, with the mean use of 3 L water/L cherries with water recirculation and 1.8 L /L without recirculation. Due to chemical composition of cherry, there was an increase in the organic load and solid components in the wastewater during washing, pulping and mucilage removal operations. High concentrations of nitrogen and potassium indicated the possibility of its use in fertirrigation.
