Hourly fuel consumption is one of the most important factors in production management of a farm. The correct selection of working speed and depth is a simple practice which can contribute in many cases to operational economy and increased production. This work sought to evaluate the hourly fuel consumption of a tractor performing plowing and harrowing under three forward speeds 5.0, 6.0, and 8.0 km h-1 and 2 depths of 0.10 and 0.20 m. The experiment was conducted at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences located in the city of Montes Claros, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Two sensors for flow measurement were placed in the supply line of the tractor and one in the return line. The signals from the two sensors were sent to a data acquisition system and discharged to a specific program on a microcomputer. The lowest forward speed and lowest working depth resulted in lower fuel consumption of the tractor. The decrease in hourly fuel consumption demanded by the operation of a plowing and harrowing tractor is possible only with decreasing speed and working depth.Downloads
