University extension plays a crucial role in building bridges between academia and society, promoting the exchange between scientific and popular knowledge, social inclusion and human development. The objective was to report the intervention experience with institutionalized elderly people and with adult caregivers through playful activities, in order to contribute to the recovery of self-esteem, memory, communication and social interaction. The descriptive study presents the authors' experience within the scope of the Educar para Prevenir Saúde do Adulto e do Idoso extension project. By carrying out the activities, it is believed that there was a significant advance in the self-esteem and socialization of the participants. The project is a concrete example of how extension initiatives can promote positive changes, both in the individuals served and in academics, promoting reflection on social problems and contributing to the construction of a more inclusive and supportive society.
