Drought affects several parts of the globe and causes negative social, economic and environmental effects. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of the Standardized Vegetation Index (PVI) obtained from the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) for ten days of SPOT-Vegetation satellite, for monitoring drought in northeast Brazil based on the historical series from 1998 to 2012. In order to verify the results, rainfall data obtained from the TRMM satellite (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) from March 2011 to March 2012 was standardized. As of December 2011, it was observed that rainfall was below normal for most of the northeast, resulting in a decrease in IVP for the entire area under study. Factors such as positioning of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and El Niño influence rainfall in the region. The results are satisfactory, indicating the occurrence of severe drought in Northeast Brazil since January 2012. IVP variability was observed along with delay in vegetation response to rainfall estimates based on the TRMM. The analyses confirmed that the IVP was efficient for drought monitoring in northeastern Brazil.Downloads
