Mental health and eating behavior of older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the population, especially the older adults, a vulnerable group. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between eating behavior and the mental health of older adults participating in an outreach project during the COVID-19 pandemic. Socioeconomic and health data, eating behavior and depressive symptoms were collected. The sample included 26 individuals. During the pandemic, 38.5% reported depressive symptoms and 46.2% altered food consumption. An association was found between uncontrolled eating and changes in food consumption, as well as between emotional eating and changes in income and depressive symptoms. In addition, changes in body weight were higher among individuals who ate alone. The results suggest impacts of the pandemic on the mental health and eating behavior of older people, which highlights the importance of university outreach to mitigate impacts in pandemic contexts.
