Ornamental plants have beencultivated in Alagados Construidos (SACs) in view of the economic and landscape benefits they can bring, besides the satisfactory efficiency in the removal of pollutants from wastewater. The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficiency of SACs grown with ornamental plants and the influence of vegetation on the removal of pollutants from swine wastewater. The SACs were submitted to an organic loading rate of 100 kg ha-1d-1 swine wastewater, based on the mean value of the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of the wastewater. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the systems, BOD, Total Solids (ST), Suspended Solids (SS), Turbidity (T), and Total Nitrogen analyzes were performed in the effluent and effluent to the SAC's every 15 days during Systems. The average efficiency in the removal of the variables was calculated from the influent and effluent concentrations and flows. The Heliconia psittacorum and Hedychium coronarium cultures in SACs did not present statistical differences (p <0.05) in the efficiency of removal of the evaluated attributes, when compared to the non-cultivated SAC, during the period of operation of the systems. The SAC cultivated with Hedychium coronarium provided mean efficiencies of 92.2; 68.7; 79.9; 82.6 and 90.8%, and SAC cultivated with Heliconia psittacorum provided mean efficiencies of 82.4; 81.5; 80.6; 83.4 and 82.3%, in the removal of BOD, SS, ST, Turbidity and Total Nitrogen, respectively.Downloads
