Preservation of fishing stocks: actions and interventions of artisan fishermen

Abstract

From the 1980s onwards, there was a significant reduction in the volume of fish production and artisanal fishers were the main victims, as the conservation of the environment is a basic condition for their very existence. In this context, this article aimed to show the historical relationship between the fishing gear used by artisanal fisherman and fishing capture, as well as to present the possibilities of preserving the species captured in the Lagoa dos Patos estuary. The method used was descriptive and historical through bibliographical research, relevant to answer the proposed objective. From the results, it was found that, until the 1960s, artisanal fishing activity predominated in Rio Grande do Sul, with a preponderance of the rules established by fishermen in regulating the rights to capture fishery resources without impacting the fishing stocks. used, but from that period onwards, the government began to intervene directly in the development of fishing activity through fiscal incentive and rural credit policies, which enabled the emergence of transformation industries, causing a change in behavior in the way of organization of artisanal fishermen in relation to the capture of fish, given that prohibited techniques are used to capture fish as an alternative to improve the level of income, causing overfishing of fishery resources. Thus, there is a need for training, in environmental education, for fishermen and their families in search of alternatives to generate income for the maintenance of fish stocks.
