WEARING EVALUATION OF DIESEL CYCLE ENGINE RUNNING ON VEGETAL OIL – DIESEL MIXTURES

Abstract

The energy availability can be a limiting factor for the development of industrialized countries. This study was done to evaluate the residue formation in the combustion chamber, the fuel consumption and electricity cost, with use of a low power diesel engine fed with vegetal oil-diesel mixtures to move an electric generator. The electricity generating block consisted of the Agrale Engine, model M90, and a Bambozzi generator and consumed by a group of incandescent light bulbs. The data showed that there was no residue formation in the combustion chamber that required decarbonization before 300 operational hours in any of the mixes of vegetable oil-diesel up to the ratio of 50%. However, there was lubricant contamination in all combinations, which suggested that interval between lubricant changes should be reduced. There was no wearing of engine components during the test period. The use of vegetal oil is a viable alternative in isolated communities.
